While his boat was lying at the l^ittsburgh wharf,Fort Sumpter was fired upon, which aroused the old martial spirit in himand he enlisted in Cap. Hayes company. On account of his army ex-perience and knowledge of tactics, he was elected orderly sergeant. Hewas an excellent drill master and a brave officer, and upon the resigna-tion of Cap. Hayes, he was commissioned captain and served as suchuntil March 13, 1862, when, owing to a misunderstanding with a superiorofficer, he tendered his res
