After the First World War, men who had served in the British Army during the conflict were taught new skills and trades to equip them for civilian life. Here, at Ewshott Camp near Fleet in Hampshire, England, former soldiers pose for a formal photograph with their instructors – including one in a rather incongruous bow tie – with a handwritten sign reading "Ex Service Men Learning trades at Ewshott" The Ewshott, Ewshot or Crookham Camp was built early in WW1 to house the Royal Artillery Regiment and the Royal Army Medical Corps. This group photograph was probably taken around 1919 or 1920 when many of the servicemen were returning to 'civvy street'. It is from a collection of memorabilia saved over a long life of service in the British Army by a senior officer in the Corps of Royal Engineers. After fighting in WW1, he spent much of the inter-war period training Royal Engineer 'sappers', and was recalled from retirement early in WW2 to help train a new generation of soldiers to build Bailey bridges and other types of temporary crossing for the D-Day Normandy Landings in Occupied Europe in June 1944.
