Fagaras Mountains Natura 2000 site / Romania: One of many giant clear cuts in Ucea Mare valley in Fagaras Mountains Natura 2000 site.

Fagaras Mountains / Romania - Giant clear-cut in Ucea Mare valley, a Natura 2000 protected site. Romania hosts the largest remains of primeval forest in Europe. Authorities approved this 100 ha large deforestation, which was in clear contradiction to national and European law. They said, there was a bark beetle attack. An oft used argument for brutal forest exploitation in Romania. It will take many decades until this wound in the forest cover of the mountain will recover. Tragically, Romania is destroying its outstanding natural heritage at a fast pace. Natura 2000 sites are centers of forest destruction and logging of ancient paradise forests continues. There are almost no restrictions for forest exploitation. Most of Romania's old growth forest heritage has been destroyed in the last 10-15 years, in front of the eyes of the Government and authorities.
