North America Nebula. Optical image of NGC 7000, the North America Nebula (red, upper left). North is at top. To the right of NGC 7000 is the Pelican Nebula (IC 5067-5070, red). Both objects are emission nebulae that glow red due to the ionisation of hydrogen gas by radiation from nearby stars. These nebulae are around 1600 light years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus.
