A text-book of the diseases of the ear for students and practitioners . le arises in front of theanterior orifice of the semicanal forthe tensor tympani muscle, on theosseous wall of that portion of thepetrous bone adjacent to the carotidcanal and from the cartilaginousEustachian tube. The round tendonof this penniform muscle leaves thecanal at the processus cochlearifor-mis; it then runs straight across thetympanic cavity in a direction almostat right angles to its belly (Fig. 39, s),arid is inserted at the inner marginof the manubrium at the anterioredge of its rhomboidal surface, andin an oblique direction to its longi-tudinal axis. The tendon of the tensor tympani, whichcan be traced some distance in its canal, liesin a sheath in its free course (Toynbeestensor ligament). According to Henle, thissheath is connected to the tendon by con-siderable prolongations of connective anterior portion of this muscle is some-times in close relation with the tensor veli jiIGpalatini, either directly or by fibrous tissue(L. Meyer). :??- £&? KL^. 38. — Section throughthe Hammer, MembranaTympani and ExternalAttic. 2. The Stapedius Muscle arisesfrom the eminentia pyramidalis h> _Hnead °f f}e hammer^ te, An(Fig. 40, ms). It is pyriform inlongitudinal sections, and generallyprismatic, with rounded edges, intransverse sections. The fibres, springing from the muscular sheath, extend from the floor and lateral wallsof the cavity, upwards and towardsthe middle of the muscle, and mergeinto a tendon, the tissue of whichcan often be traced beyond the middle of the muscle. Thisdelicate tendon passes into the tympanum through an apertureat the apex of the eminentia pyramidalis, and is inserted at 3 nulus tendinosus of the mem-brana tympani ; b, Processusbrevis ; u, Umbo; t, Chordatympani ; I, Ligament, mall, sup. ; e, Ligament, mallei ext.;s, Membrana flaccida (Shrap-nelli) ; ae, External attic ; P,Prussaks space, recessus epi-tympan. ; c, Vascular canalbetween the external a
