Still later a similar circular,with special reference to the ruinous condition of thechurch, was sent to the Dutch Lutherans on the Island ofSt. Thomas in the West Indies. Subsequently a sum of money was received in responseto this last appeal, but unfortunately with the proviso thatit was to be used only towards building a new Here a new complication arose : the money was badlyneeded for congregational purposes, and so was a newchurch building, but during the prevailing financial strin-gency there was no way of supplementing the amountreceived so as to make it available.
