Oncocytoma. Light micrograph (LM) of a section from affected tissue. Oncocytomas are a type of tumour, usually benign. While these tumours can occur in different areas of the body, oncocytomas commonly refer to renal (kidney) oncocytomas. These epithelial tumor are composed of oncocytes, large eosinophilic cells having small, round, benign-appearing nuclei with large nucleoli with excessive amounts of mitochondria. Although renal oncocytomas are benign lesions and metastases are extremely uncommon as they cannot be confidently pre-operatively distinguished from renal cell carcinomas, they are surgically resected.
