Absinthe bar at The Brompton Bar and Grill, Knightsbridge, London, Britain - 07 Jul 2011

The green fairy has landed in London with the opening of a new absinthe bar. Located below The Brompton Bar and Grill, the establishment is the city's first purely dedicated to the 70 per cent proof spirit. Pale green and with a taste of herbs and aniseed, absinthe was the drink of choice among 19th-century bohemians and was banned in France in 1914 for causing wildness, lasciviousness and hallucinations. Even today it still remains forbidden in many European countries. However, it is enjoying something of a revival in Britain, where it has never been banned. At the new Brompton Road absinthe bar the tipple is being offered with a modern twist. For example, the Absinthe Caipirinha is a blend of Absinthe La Clandestine, brown sugar and lime juice. However, for purists the best way to drink absinthe is in the traditional shot form, complete with preparation ritual involving a slotted spoon, sugar cube and water fountain.
