Cucumber necrosis virus (CNV), computer model. This image was created using molecular modelling software and data from cryo-electron microscopy. The virus at top left shows the outer protein shell, known as the capsid, coloured by protein subunit. The cutaway view at lower right shows the outer shell (blue), an inner shell made of ribonucleic acid (purple) and a core made of protein (orange). CNV is transmitted by a fungus and infects cucumber plants, causing the leaves to discolour and wilt. Cryo-electron microscopes fire multi-angled beams of electrons at specimens that are kept at minus 150 degrees Celsius. The microscope collects 'slices' of data that are reconstructed into 3-D models by computer.
