The Jolly Mandolinist (Der Naar), painted in 1625, is a portrait of one of Franz Hals' favorite pupils, Adriaen Brouwer.
Franz Hals (c. 1582–1666) was born in southern Netherlands—what is today Belgium. A Dutch Golden Age painter, Hals is credited as a revolutionary in the field of portraiture. He was particularly known for the way he captured light and atmosphere. Shown here is The Jolly Mandolinist (Der Naar), pained in 1625. It is a portrait of one of Hals' favorite pupils, Adriaen Brouwer, who was renowned for his music talent and his love of practical jokes. A snapshot would not have had a more instantaneous effect. The Spanish costume suggests celebration of one of the famous Haarlem masquerades. Among his works are Banquet of the Officers of the St. George Civic Guard, Catharina Hooft and her Nurse, Gipsy Girl, and Malle Babbe.
