The great ScandinavianExodus of the ninth and tenth centuries drained the northernlands of some of the best elements of their population. Forthis reason these countries did not play as prominent a part inmediaeval history as they probably would otherwise have Russia and the Scandinavian Countries at the Close of theMiddle Ages The constant contentions between the ungovernable nobility andtheir sovereigns were also another cause of internal weakness. In the year 1397, by what is known as the Union of Calmar, thethree kingdoms of Norway, Denmark, and Sweden were unitedunder Margaret of Denmark, Hhe Semiramis of the North. Thetreaty provided that each country should retain its constitutionand make its own laws. But the treaty was violated, and thoughthe friends of the measure had hoped much from it, it broughtonly jealousies, feuds, and wars. Thus the history of these northern countries during the later 2 22 GROWTH OF THE NATIONS [§245 mediaeval time presents nothing of primary interest which callsfor narration here; but early in the Modern Age we shall seeSweden developing rapidly as an independent monarchy and fora period playing an important part in European affairs.
