Under Int. Conv., Feb. 27. MANTLE k-nitted from asbestos thread is soaked iu asolution of the soluble .salts of metals having refractoryoxides, dried, and stretched upon a mould to give itthe desired form. This is done in order to harden andstiffen the mantle. It is then calcined in a gas flameand a thick layer of cerium oxide is deposited upon itby soaking it in a strong solution of a cerium salt, dryingand subsequently calcining it.—W. H. C.
