The elder man is about forty-eight; his face is dark, handsome, sensitive, force-ful; his eyes are resolute and keen; he isclean-shaven; he wears a small turban from underwhich his thin black hair ciirls on his neck; he isdressed with sombre magnificence in the costumeof the Italian Renaissance, — more particularly,the last decade of the fifteenth century. This isthe Lord Alessandro. The other man, Pietro, isabout twenty-three; his face is strong, heavy witha kind of brooding passion, — the lips full andslightly pouting, high cheekbones, and sombredeepset eyes; a cruel, violent, beautiful face. Heis clean-shaven; his thick, black, outstanding hairfloivs to his shoulders; he is richly and elegantlydressed. The woman, Gismonda, is an incom-parably lovely creature of eighteen, with a fullbut small red mouth, a brilliant complexion, blackeyes, and delicately arch
