This image may not be used in educational posters Chlamydia infection. Computer artwork of the non-replicating infectious form of the Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria, known as elementary bodies (EBs), landing on a host cell. Each EB is surrounded by a cell envelope (green) covered in protein spikes (gold) that inject material into the host cells. Within the EB are ribosomes (red), the site of protein synthesis. Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection that can go undetected causing infertility. It also causes the eye disease trachoma, which can lead to blindness.
