The early 1900s caption reads: "HUGH CAPET AND THE COUNT OF PERIGORD.—Hugh Capet was a great lord of France who seized the kingdom from the degenerate descendants of Charlemagne and established his own family to reign there as long as France had kings. [He was king from 987 to 996.] He had little real power over the wild barons around him. Once seeking to remind the Count of Perigord of his dependence on the throne, Hugh asked him ‘Who made you count?’ ‘Who made you king?‘ defiantly rejoined the haughty count.”
