Bell and Gray using their telephones. 19th-century illustration of the telephone pioneers the Scottish-US inventor Alexander Graham Bell (left, 1847-1922) and the US electrical engineer Elisha Gray (right, 1835-1901), using the telephones they invented. The telephone was developed in the 1870s, with several inventors pioneering the technology. Bell's work helped develop and make telephones into practical working devices. He patented his telephone (1876) and founded the Bell Telephone Company. Gray developed a prototype of the telephone independently from Bell. Gray submitted his patent for the invention on the same day as Bell in February 1876, but Bell's patent was granted first. After two years of litigation Bell was credited as the inventor.
