I cannot give up the evident descent fromthe lotus flower and bud; but I have said before that a pattern hassometimes a double parentage, and it may be so in this case. 3 The lotus is almost entirely lost as a native growth in India, and isfast disappearing in Egypt. The lotus blossom in Egypt was not onlya sacred emblem, but also an objet de luxe. At their feasts, the honouredguests were presented with the flowers, and as they faded, slaves carriedround baskets of fresh blossoms. See Wilkinsons Manners andCustoms of the Ancient Egyptians.
