Dennis McFadden, US neuroscientist, working on the Lesbian Ear Study. McFadden has worked since 1967 at the Psychology Department of the University of Texas at Austin, USA, retiring to emeritus status in 2011. He specialised in research on hearing. He studied sex differences in a phenomenon called oto-acoustic emission (OAE), a trait of the inner ear being measured with the equipment here. McFadden showed that differences exist in OAEs for women versus men, women versus twins, and women with different sexual orientations. It is thought that androgens (male sex hormones) in the womb cause these effects. Photographed in 2013.
