The Masai race [E. a. knodienJiaueri), typically from German East Africa, is a very large elephant, with small, regularly triangularears, with the lappet angu-lated and pointed. A mounted specimen in theBritish Museum (fig. 3) fromnear Fort Manning, north-east Rhodesia, standing i ifeet 4 inches in height, withears measuring 4 feet 2\inches by 3 feet 5 inches,either belongs to this raceor indicates a closely alliedtype.
