Shamian means sand surface which is all this island was until foreign traders were permitted to set up their warehouses here in the middle of the 18th century Land reclamation has increased its area to its present size 900m from east to west and 300m from north to south The island became a British and French concession after these nations defeated the Chinese in the Opium Wars and is covered with decaying colonial buildings that housed trading offices and residences The French Catholic Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel has been restored and stands on the main boulevard The boulevard itself is a gentle stretch of gardens trees and birdsong Today most of the buildings are used as offices or apartment blocks Slowly but surely the island is being gentrifled as new sidewalk cafes bars and boutiques open to cater to tourists and residents
