The First Cathedral of America


The Cathedral "Santa María la Menor", also known as Cathedral Santa María of the Incarnation, or simply by The First Cathedral of America, it's the oldest cathedral of America. This religious temple is located in the "Ciudad Colonial" at the city of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The "Ciudad Colonial" (aka, "Zona Colonial", Spanish for Colonial City) is the first settlement made by Columbus and the Spanish explorers in the New World. It has been declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Seat of the "Arquidiócesis" of Santo Domingo, its construction began in 1512, under the direction of Archbishop Geraldini, devoting itself until 1541. The 12 of February of 1546, at the request of the emperor Carlos V, the Pope Pablo III granted the status of Metropolitan and Prioritized Cathedral of the Indians.
