Trench of Thirst in the Bois d'Ailly in the St Mihiel Salient. WWI Battlefield south of Verdun, France. October 2014 Showing the German defensive trench lines. The Trench of Thirst, so named after a group of French soldiers were surrounded by the German Army during a French action on 20 may 1917. After 3 days with no water the French under Commandant d'Andre surrendered. The Battle of Saint-Mihiel was a World War I battle fought from 12–15 September 1918, involving the American Expeditionary Force and 48,000 French troops under the command of General John J. Pershing of the United States against German positions.
