Whalley Abbey in Lancashire was founded in 1296 by Cistercian monks from Stanlow in the Wirral and had a somewhat troubled history up until the Dissolution in 1537 (the same year as it's Abbot was executed for High Treason). Following the Dissolution the Abbey bacame a private residence up until 1923 when the Diocese of Manchester bought it and turned it into a religious centre.
