The muco-periosteum is laid back and thissharp ridge removed with the rongeur forceps. The pain is re-lieved and plates can be worn Fig. 20, shows very clearly the condition of the ridge of themandible two years, four months after the universal method ofmerely extracting the teeth, with no further attention given. The Alveolar process, being a transitory tissue, after theteeth are removed, gradually fades away. In the fading processthere is a collapse of the center of the alveolar process andthe buccal and lingual surfaces collapse, as it were, like acouple of boards being pushed together, thus leaving a knifeedge of very hard, bony process, which is lacking in bloodsupply. It is this knife edge of bone which accounts for thesevere complications so many people have in wearing artificialdentures. The condition as shown in this model is a condition I haveobserved after cutting down upon the center of the ridge ofthe edentulous mandible of five hundred and twenty-sevencases, ranging all the way from one to ten years after theteeth were removed.
