W. Manning, Kniphofia aloides KNIPHOFIA - Flame-Flower. (Liliacece.) Plants of the highest ornamental merit, form- ing broad tufts of grass-like foliage, and with showy, towering spikes of flowers. In well- drained soils and warm situations, they will prove quite hardy, though it is usually safer to store them in cellars in the winter. Showy for the border, or grouped on the lawn, or used for sub- tropical effects. K. aloides (uvaria. Tritoma uvaria). [Torch Lily.] 3 ft., 8-9. Cape of Good Hope. Tall spikes of small tubular flowers, deep scarlet in the bud, opening clear orange-yellow, and giving a peculiar frame-like appearance to the whole. Re- markably effective. 25 cents. Other species in stock ; list upon application. LATHYRUS - Pea. (Leguminosce.) These are exceedingly ornamental and very desirable plants, suited to any moderately good soil. These are free climbers, and well adapted to grow on garden trellises, to cover walls, stumps, and trees, and with their constant bloom give striking and satisfactory results. L. latifolius. [Ever-blooming Pea.] 10 ft., 0-10.] Eur. Dense clusters of deep-red flowers in constant succession throughout the summer. Fine for cutting purposes. 25 cents. [White Perennial Pea.] L. latifolius var. albus Pure white flowers. One of the finest of hardy plants in cultivation, seldom out of bloom from early June until hard frost, and producing fine clusters of purest white flowers on good stems for cutting.
