A selection of beer-like drinks on sale in a supermarket in Japan. In Japan, different brewed malt beverages are categorized into two groups: beer and "happoshu", depending on the amount of malt used (happoshu describes the cheaper, low-malt brews). In the mid-2000s, breweries started introducing even cheaper non-malt brews made from ingredients including soybeans, creating another category for beer-like drinks called "dai-san no biiru", or "third-category beers". The selling price can be kept lower than beer drinks due to the way Japan taxes these kinds of beverages.
