Rust remover. Bottle of a commercial rust remover product, with a child-safe cap. Rust is hydrated iron oxide, though rust removing products can often be used to remove oxides and tarnishes from other metals or alloys, such as brass and copper (indicated on label). This product comprises a solution containing phosphoric acid. Applying this to the brown-coloured rust areas turns the iron oxide into iron phosphate (black) which is then scrubbed off the iron object.
