Grey sky view Platz der Republic entrance neo-baroque Reichstag Building, with German Flags flying, Berlin, Germany

The 137 m long, 97 m wide neo-Baroque architecture Reichstag was built 1884-94. From 1894-1933 it was the meeting place of the parliaments of the German Empire and post-World War 1 Weimar Republic. On October 4th 1990 the first meeting of the re-unified German Bundestag took place here. The German Government/Bundestag decided to use the Reichstag as the German Parliament building on October 29th 1991. In 1993 the British architect, Sir Norman Foster, was asked to transform the building into the new meeting place of the German Parliament. In 1995 the German Government decided to have a dome erected again (the original building having a huge dome, with imperial crown on top). The new dome, directly above the assembly hall, is open to the public and is major city landmark.
