The reconstruction of the Pennington road, which isnow under way, is under the supervision of DanielKlockner, road super\MSor of Mercer County. A newsurface is laid directly on the old one, no especial prepa-ration of the old being made to insure a good bond be-tween the two. The old road was laid down abouttwelve years ago and has since been given surface treat-ment with glutrin. It carries very heavy traffic, mostof the product of the Pennington Trap Rock Co. beinghauled over it in addition to a considerable automobiletravel. It is now practically worn out under the mosttrying combination of traffic—heavy iron tire haulingand automobiles. Trap rock is hauled about one mile, from the quarriesof the Pennington Trap Rock Co,, for use on the RED SHALE AND GH AI. IlnXCETON. lAGE AVE. ASPHAET PLAXT, HAillLTOX. A bottom course is laid about lyi to 2 inches thick, 1%-inch stone being used. This is then rolled thoroughlywith a Peerless 10-ton roller. Another layer of 134-inchstone is spread on this and is also thoroughly rolled. AJ<2-inch layer of screenings is then scattered on top, wetted with glutrin diluted with 10 times its volume ofwater and again subjected to a thorough rolling. Theroad is then allowed to dry out for a short time beforethe final surface treatment. Beginning with a very thin mixture, perhaps one partglutrin to twenty of water, this preparation is sprinkledover the surface, using an ordinary sprinkling cart. Asfast as it is absorbed, more is applied until the road hastaken up about li gallon of glutrin per square yard. Thelast application is mixed in the proportion of one partglutrin to three or four of water. The mixture is appliedto the center of the road, and by absorption and capil-
