Chancay. Covering Cloth. 1000–1476. Peru. Cotton, plain weave; tie dyed The two panels of this covering cloth are woven from delicate cotton threads, their exceptional fineness evidence of Chancay spinning expertise. The oblique bands are composed of groups of smaller resist-dyed squares, creating a dynamic interplay between positive and negative space. This strong diagonal pattern resembles designs painted upon Chancay ceramics, where they often appear on garments worn by human figures.
