As above so below UK The MOST ADORABLE red squirrel can be seen admiring its reflection in North Yorkshire. The images show the squirrel jumping and almost running on water after hazelnuts in the Yorkshire Dales. Red Squirrels are native to the UK, but with the introduction of the grey squirrel from North America caused our once common native red squirrel to go on the retreat, disappearing from great swathes of the country. The total UK population is now thought to be as low as 120,000 animals, of which more than three-quarters are found in Scotland. The Yorkshire Dales is believed to be one of the last strongholds of red squirrels in England. These images were captured in Paul Fowlie’s Photography Hides by a British photographer, Megan James, using Canon R5 and R6 cameras with RF 70-200 and RF 100-500 lenses. “I felt utter joy photographing these native red squirrels,” she said. “It filled me with happiness to spend time with a species that is now endangered in England. I felt honoured to get to spend a day with them and immerse myself in their comings and goings. “Watching them play and squabble and use their masterful skills to open whole hazelnuts in seconds. I felt truly grateful. “What I love most about the photos is how they capture the characters and personalities of these squirrels. “Their cheekiness, determination, agility and, of course, their natural beauty. “The reflection pool offers an opportunity to capture them in this unique way, which accentuates their agility, beauty and vibrant colour.” ENDs
