Costume of Coutances. Woman in mourning habit. In the past, widows wore mourning for their husband all their lives, and widowers several years for their wives. Hand-colored fashion plate illustration by Lante engraved by Gatine from Louis-Marie Lante's "Costumes des femmes du Pays de Caux," 1827/1885. With their tall Alsation lace hats, the women of Caux and Normandy were famous for the elegance and style.
