Ethanol Molecule on Whiteboard, Teaching Situation
Ethanol can be used as fuel for automobiles alone or added to gasoline to make 'gasohol.' Gasohol is used to reduce pollution as well as reduce petroleum dependence. The most common compositions are E10 and E85 which the numbers refer to the percentage of ethanol in the fuel. Bio-ethanol is derived from crops as opposed to manufacture from petroleum feedstocks. It is a renewable resource that can be domestically produced. It involves conversion of starch or sugar from crops to alcohol via fermentation. The resulting de-watered mash is sold as brewers grains for animal feed or other purposes.
