Thomas Davis Simonton (1831-1907), US astronomer. Simonton trained as a dentist in Baltimore, graduating in 1852. His interest in astronomy was awakened by his mother's descriptions of the great Leonids meteor shower of 1833. Simonton's translation from the German of The Bible and Astronomy was published in 1857, and he made astronomical observations of his own after settling in St Paul, Minnesota. He also helped to popularise astronomy, founding the St Paul Academy of Natural Sciences in 1873, and later continuing its Astronomical Section. This image was published in volume 16 (1908) of the US magazine Popular Astronomy.
