After stampeding into the water when alarmed by a landing party, the animals swam up and down the rookery, just outside the breakers, roaring or barking, according to the species. There were generally several individuals too sleepy or too lazy to leave with the herd, and these paid no attention whatever to the loud uproar kept up by their fellows in the water.
