This arrangement retains for the ma-chine all the automatic features, startingand stopping the compressor by the vary-ing of the air pressure. There is nodepressing of track necessary for thecars that have to be loaded with the ashes,and there is no delay in cleaning fires, be-cause the pit is full of ashes. The clean-ing of fires and disposing of ashes is doneby piece-work, and this improved arrange-ment has cut the cost in two. The menwho are doing the work make better paythan they secured when doing the workby shoveling, and they find the newmetliod much more agreeable than the oldone. A. S.
