Electric Trucks for Line Repairs By G. H. McKelway Engineer of Distribution Brooklyn (N. Y.)Rapid Transit Company AN ELECTRIC truck fitted with a tower as used for. electric line work in Johannesburg, South Africa, was described in the Aug. 20 issue of the ElectricRailway Journal. While the use of this type oftruck for such work in the United States is some-what unusual when compared with the number ofgasoline-driven trucks used still there are quite a num-ber in successful operation in various parts. Some of the disadvantages found with electric trucksare: High first cost, as they average almost twice asmuch as a gasoline truck of the same capacity; theyhave a comparatively low speed, and their workingradius is limited by the necessity of recharging thebattery. The truck used in Johannesburg was said to. Electric Trucks for Overhead Line Repairs be able to run at a rate of 20 , and to make 50miles on a single charge of the battery. For city work, where the paving is good and where there is littleinterference from snow, the working radius of this typeof truck will undoubtedly be ample. The electric truck has some advantages over the gaso-line truck, which include reliability, ease of handling, low maintenance cost and long life. Results from theuse of such trucks indicate that they are seldom in theshop, and that an expert chauffeur is not required fortheir operation. The accompanying illustration showsan electric truck used in emergency service eight andone-half years and is still giving good satisfaction.
