Across South America; an account of a journey from Buenos Aires to Lima by way of Potosí, with notes on Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, and Peru . in a pamphlet, and from all that I couldhear, Glorieta has a distant resemblance to ConeyIsland. After passing Glorieta, w^e crossed a small cafion, climbed the sides of a deep gorge, and suddenly foundourselves at the city gates. Sucre has a population of twenty thousand souls, including fifty negroes, and two or three hundredforeigners, a large number of whom are Spaniardsengaged in mercantile business. There are tw^o orthree hotels here, and we were in some doubt as towhich might offer the best welcome. After a vaineffort to locate the Prefect and get his advice, wedecided to go to the Hotel Colon where we foundlarge comfortable rooms on the second floor, facingthe plaza. The proprietor was most polite and at-tentive. The only fault that we had to find withhim was his continual spitting. The fact that therewere no cuspidors and that he was ruining his owncarpet did not deter him in the least. Perhaps hehad rented the furnishings. It is superfluous to speak of the filth of the kitchen. THE GREAT RIVER PILCOMAYO li ihltri%^ iilMlh#* *il «<lil»t^iftijtiifci^^i *iWw» JB^IMfc** ^
