Romanians and their supporters in London braved the pouring rain as they marked eight weeks of protests as part of a worldwide campaign against the establishment of a gold mine at Rosia Montana in the country's Transylvania provence. The mine will use large quantities of cyanide in its gold extraction process, raising the risk of groundwater contamination. The protesters are also concerned about the preservation of ancient Roman gold mining galleries as well as the beautiful scenery which will be devastated by the vast opencast mine.
