Durward Street, murder scene of Mary Ann Nichols, Jack the Ripper's first victim, Whitechapel, East London, UK.
There are many 'facts' associated with the Ripper and his victims so I must state the basis of the "facts" of this image. See C8XR9K OR C8XRE4 OR C8XREJ for images of the burial plaque close to where Mary Ann Nichols is buried. Durward Street was called Buck's Row in 1888. The body of Mary Ann Nichols was found "across from Essex Wharf and the Brown and Eagle Wool Warehouse and Schneiders Cap Factory in a gateway entrance to Brown's stableyard between a board school (to the west) and terrace houses (cottages) belonging to better class tradesmen." (source ) The school building is behind the frame to the right which leads me to believe this is the approx location where the body was found. ""Jack the Ripper" is the best-known name given to an unidentified serial killer who was active in the largely impoverished areas in and around the Whitechapel district of London in 1888. The name originated in a letter, written by someone claiming to be the murderer, that was disseminated in the media. The letter is widely believed to have been a hoax, and may have been written by a journalist in a deliberate attempt to heighten interest in the story. Other nicknames used for the killer at the time were "The Whitechapel Murderer" and "Leather Apron"." "Opinions vary as to whether these murders should be linked to the same culprit, but five of the eleven Whitechapel murders, known as the "canonical five", are widely believed to be the work of the Ripper. The canonical five Ripper victims are Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes and Mary Jane Kelly." Wikipedia info
