A tortoise shell casket, France, circa 1680 A rectangular wooden casket with a slightly cambered lid. The entire surface is covered with tortoise shell. Richly ornameted fire-gilded mountings with inlaid silver portrait medallions in half relief. A cupid among leafy vines on the lid. The inside is lined with ornate paper, and the bottom is covered with green shagreen leather. The key with an openwork gold plated bow. Dimensions 11 x x cm.
