Light micrograph of the foraminiferan Allogromia sp. (large oval body) feeding on diatoms (small elongated objects) in a sample of mud from the Severn Estuary, near Bristol. Foraminiferans are amoeboid protozoans which bear perforated shells or tests of chitinous, calcareous or siliceous matter. A network of long, thin, hair-like pseudopodia extend through the pores of Allogromia's single-chambered, oval test. A large diatom has been trapped by the pseudopodia at right and is being drawn towards the foraminiferan's mouth. Magnification unknown.
