Blue sky white clouds view, to north side tenements, Mermaid Statue and people looking paintings, Old Town Market Place, Warsaw

The bronze statue of the Warsaw Mermaid, in Warsaw's Old Market Place, is a copy of the original statue, erected in 1855 and now in the grounds of the Museum of Warsaw. The mermaid, originally a dragon with a male human head, has been in place on Warsaw's Coat of Arms since 1390. There are various legends about the origins of the mythical creature. The main one is that a mermaid, swimming in the River Vistula, stopped on the river-bank in the Old Town to rest. Liking it, she decided to stay. A merchant imprisoned her. Local fishermen rescued her, and, ever since, the mermaid, armed with sword and shield, has been ready to help protect the city and residents. After destruction by the Germans in 1944, The buildings around the square were re-built, as they would have appeared in the 17th century, 1948-1953. A portrait shot towards the north side of the square, with people looking at paintings on display in the square and umbrella shades above outside tables at restaurants on the east side of the square.
