The widowof Thayendanegea was the eldest daughter of the head chief ofthe Turtle tribe—first in rank of the Mohawk nation. Inher own right, therefore, on the decease of her husband, shestood at the head of the Iroquois Confederacy, alone clothed withpower to designate a successor to the chieftaincy.
