The sun was sinking in the west, his last crimson raysflashing over the waters of the bay of \alparaiso. But even as welooked the glory of the scene faded, the sun went down beneath thehorizon and the approaching city became pale and phantom-like inthe deepening twilight. Next morning we bade adios to the waters of the Pacific andstarted across the mighty Andes on our way to »ii NAVAL MONUMENT, VALPARAISO CHAPTER XIII THE CAPITAL OF CHILE SANTIAGO, GEM OF THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC We left Valparaiso by an early morning train with quite a largenumber of passengers on board, cosmopolitan and native. From thefirst stretch of road skirting the harbor, the waters of the bayflecked with boats of many nationalities, lay glittering in the softlight forming a very pretty and appealing picture as the undulatingmotion of the wavelets flashed back the rays of the ascending sunin streamers of glinting glory which lent such life and lovelinessand charm to the place that we could not resist looking back untilthe scene receded into the distance of space as we sped onward onour journey. Soon we came to parched and brown fields lying oneither side of the track, presenting an unpleasant contrast to the sea-views we had just left behind.
