This bigeye emperor (Monotaxis grandoculis: 35 cms.) was 'resting' motionless by itself near a coral outcrop - which is typical behaviour for this species. One can sometimes encounter a group of them in similar mode. They are found in the Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. Since the early 2000s, they have been seen in the eastern Mediterranean, presumably having travelled there through the Suez Canal. They prey mainly on molluscs, crustaceans, worms and tunicates. This picture also indicates what the surface of the sea looks like from underwater. Egyptian Red Sea.
