After being ostracized, Themistocles offered his services to Artaxerxes, the Persian king.

,In 480 , the time of the so-called Persian Wars, the Greek fleet decisively defeated the Persians, under King Xerxes, at Salamis, an island in the Gulf of Aegina in eastern Greece. Among the Greek leaders was the renowned general and statesman Themistocles. Following the victory of Greece over Persia, Themistocles was feted at home, but in time he lost favor among the Athenians for a variety of reasons. He was ostracized in 472 or 471, which meant that be law he had to leave Athens for ten years. In time Themistocles made his way to Persia and offered Artaxerxes, the Persian king (seen here in this early 1900s illustration), his services, which the king accepted. Themistocles died in exile.
