THE CHANTRY. 449 Every year, on some day before the anniversary,the abstract of the grant was to be read in thechapter house, and the Chief Justice or KingsAttorney or Recorderof London to be pre-sent, and to receive20^. for the attend-ance, and after thereading to go straightto the herse and saycertain psalms. Thewoodcut, taken fromone of the illumina-tions of this titledeed, represents theabbot and several monks and the bedesmen Abbot, monks, and bedesmen ofWestminster Abbey, Parochial benefices were sometimes appropriatedto the maintenance of chantries ; in some caseswhat was done amounted to this: that the parishchurch was converted into a chantry for the lordof the manor and his family. The proposal wasapproved by the bishop, who made the churchcollegiate, and the chief of the four clergymen whowere to serve it an archpriest, with the care of theparishioners.
