Charles Alfred Morse, son of Charles G. and Lucy Jane (Calef)Morse, was born in Salisbury, N. H., September 8, 1857. Hisparents moved to Penacook soon after his birth, and he was aPenacook boy up to the time he began his professional education was begun in the district schools of the village andcontinued at Penacook Academy. In 1875 he started to learnthe drug business, which soon inclined him towards the medicalprofession. He soon began his studies for that profession andgraduated from the medical department of Dartmouth CollegeNovember 15, 1881. 312 HISTORY OF PENACOOK. He began practice in February, 1882, at Newmarket, N. H.,where he has continued to reside to the present time. Dr. Morsebeing emphatically a live man, immediately took an active interestin the educational and political affairs of that town. When thenew law changed the school system from the district to the town. Hon. Charles A. Morse. system Dr. Morse was elected chairman of the Board of Educa-tion, and superintended the schools for three years successfully. During the first term of President Cleveland the Doctor wasappointed postmaster, serving for four years. At the expirationof his term in that office he was elected to the legislature in 1891. Upon the election of President Cleveland to a second term, he JOHN S. ROLLINS. 313 was again appointed postmaster of Newmarket, and served outthe term of four years. In 1898 Dr. Morse was nominated byacclamation by the Democrats of the Twenty-third district andwas elected to the New Hampshire senate. On taking his seat inthat body, he was elected president fro tcm., and served also onseveral important committees.
