This image may not be used to state or imply ESA endorsement of any company or product Global monitoring of air pollution. Global map of the concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the atmosphere, an indicator for air pollution. High concentrations (red) occur over industrial areas in North America, Europe, South Africa, and China, Japan and South Korea. The data was collated by GMES PROMOTE, the Protocol Monitoring for the GMES Service Element (GSE) on Atmospheric Composition. This provides long-term monitoring of pollutants and trace gases. GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) is the former name of the European Space Agency's Copernicus programme. Image published in 2010.
